Technology in schools- Legal Concerns.

Is it appropriate for teachers and students to share text messages?

What do digital native believe about Intellectual Property?

A changing world in education

Technology is pervasive in education.  Laws, rules and regulations are constantly trying to keep up with this changing world. The next few posts will deal with legal and ethical issues that commonly come up in schools around the world.  What is appropriate and legal is one big gray area for schools and school districts.  At times it seems like everyone is looking around asking, "Well, how do you deal with this."  Few schools are leading the way and by the time they make a rule or plan, technology changes that would call for a change in that law or plan.  A great example would be the rule that many schools had about teachers texting students.  For a while it was discouraged or even forbidden. However, now there are applications available so that teachers can text their students without ever exchanging information.  Also, digital natives have a very different view of what should be legal or appropriate.  For example, digital natives seem to feel like with is online is free for them to use at their will.  I will also explore this idea in my blog posts.  Enjoy, and I look forward to your thoughts!!

  1. Intellectual property on the internet is a fascinating and complex area of investigation because the law is not clearly defined for noncommercial use. Some experts believe that an implied license exists on the internet for noncommercial printing and some distribution just as the writer of a letter to the editor can expect that her letter will be printed. When an individual posts to the internet, it is reasonable to expect that some noncommercial use will be made of the post.
